• D’Angelo announced as next guest on ‘Verzuz’

D’Angelo has been announced as the next guest set to take on popular livestream series Verzuz, happening at the end of this month.

While the series usually sees two artists highlight their songs against each other, no single opponent has been set against D’Angelo. Instead, the event is being billed as ‘D’Angelo V Friends’.

The performance will take place on Saturday February 27, at iconic Harlem venue The Apollo Theatre.

D’Angelo, a pioneering artist in the neo-soul movement of the 1990s, has been quiet for a few years now. His most recent album, ‘Black Messiah‘, was released in December 2014, marking his first full-length release since 2000.

Of the album, NME‘s Lucy Jones said, “The good – no, the astonishing – news is that this constantly engrossing record repays a decade and a half’s faith and patience.

“D’Angelo has scuttled down the digital chimney with an early Christmas gift with long-lasting rewards: not just one of the best records of 2014, but one that will stay with you throughout next year, too.”

While he’s yet to release another full-length project, he has popped up on standalone singles sporadically throughout the years. In 2019, he released ‘Unshaken’ for the soundtrack of popular video game Red Dead Redemption 2.

In that same year, he appeared alongside GZA and Rapsody on ‘Ibtihaj’, taken from the latter’s 2019 album ‘Eve’. Last year, he teamed up with fellow neo-soul icon Erykah Badu for mysterious producer Slingbaum‘s track, ‘Behoove’.

  • Swizz Beatz and Timbaland want to do a 2Pac Vs. The Notorious B.I.G. ‘VERZUZ’ battle

Swizz Beatz and Timbaland have revealed they would like to do a 2Pac Vs. The Notorious B.I.G. VERZUZ battle.

The pair appeared on ESPN2’s Jalen And Jacoby show on Friday (January 22) to talk about bringing the online battle show into the world of sports for the upcoming Super Bowl.

After being asked what their “holy grail” VERZUZ matchup would be, Tim and Swizz said they are trying to figure out how to make a 2Pac and Biggie battle become a reality.

“My dream one, I want to figure out how to do Pac and Biggie in a way that the people is gonna really love it,” said Swizz, while Timbaland approved the idea. “I’ma call you later, I’ma text you,” said Timbo.

Timbaland then suggested a battle between Prince and Michael Jackson, which co-host Jalen Rose suggested doing as a hologram battle.

VERZUZ is the popular entertainment series that pits producers, songwriters and artists against each other in a rap battle style format on Instagram Live and Apple Music.

Competitors take it in turns playing a song from a list of 20 from their discography, as fans, friends and fellow artists watch on. A winner is later decided by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz.

Kicking off in March last year after Timbaland and Swizz Beatz issued challenges to one another, artists that have taken part so far have included: T-Pain, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Brandy, Monica, Rick Ross, DMX, Snoop Dogg and many more.

The most recent VERZUZ battle took place on Friday night (January 22) and saw Ashanti go up against Keyshia Cole. The singers went hit-for-hit following a number of coronavirus-related postponements.

Meanwhile, a 2Pac compilation album is set to be released on vinyl for the first time.

The Best of 2Pac, Part 1: Thug‘ and ‘The Best of 2Pac, Part 2: Life‘, two volumes that were originally sold separately in 2007, showcase the rapper’s cherished classics from ‘Changes’ to ‘Keep Ya Head Up’. Before now the compilation records were only available on CD or digital download.
